Prototype: Maritile

Following a tabletop Game Jam, and a mutual desire to put a game on steam within contacts from my network, I was asked to digitise the gameplay of the entry made by Linde van den Heuvel, who was onboarded as creative lead on the project.

The project was a tile-builder using “Eshergons”. We went from a pirate theme to theming it around Minoan culture.

Prototype Details

This Game Prototype was made with a set of people from my network.

Programming

I was the assigned programmer for this project. At the time, I didn’t have the toolset for Game Software Architecture that I since learned.

Peer-to-peer Multiplayer was achieved via the Steamworks API and the Mirror Plugin for Unity.

System Testing was difficult, owing to the desk space I had available for two machines. I remember pacing back and forth to make my moves. To make up for that, the User tests were quite fun as everything came together as it always does.

Placeholder Art

While we were prototyping, I’d be making placeholder art so the game was readable enough. I’ll be fair, I had some fun with that because I could in the hours assigned for it.

The art was made in Blender and Photoshop. The tiling took the longest, because they had their unique shapes, and just eyeballing it wouldn’t be possible.

Apart from Annabelle’s amazing concept art, we never got around to onboarding a 3d artist. So what you see in the videos above was all done by me.

Other Talent

Linde van den Heuvel

Linde Designed this game.
She hosted a Tabletop Physical Game Jam on Campus, and from there the initial design for Maritile arose. I’m always delighted doing projects with her, besides our mutual love for coffee.

Annabelle Bradler

Annabelle took charge of the concept art as well as promotional material such as posters. Annabelle’s art is amazing. Go check out her Portfolio!

 Arthur Linning

Arthur handled all the Red Tape that existed. He Co-Founded PatPat, and was my first point of contact for anything design requirement related.

This project has been put in storage since 2023
Access

I am requesting permission to be able to share this prototype with the wide world. Once those handshakes are done, you can find it here.
